Gravity Response

“I am writing to take issue with your inept and bungling review of the film ‘Gravity’. To begin, during just the start of your review, you already began to overpower readers by attempting to brainwash them to ‘love this movie’ when actually, ‘the simple truth of the matter is’ that not everyone has the same unique and dreary taste as yourself.

However, your useless attempt to indoctrinate your audience was short lived, as before your review had even started, you began rambling nonsense about films your audience have probably never heard of. At this stage, any reader would be feeling rather overwhelmed, yet before even a minor recovery could be made, you attack them again and ask them to ‘surrender’.

In addition to this, throughout your poor attempt at a review, you constantly refer to God as if he is part of the film himself. You mentioned the ‘view from God’s balcony’ as if the film was set at his house.

When I decided to read this review, it was because I actually wanted to know about the film, not find religious inspiration. If anything your religious comments make the review slightly biased, I mean, who’s balcony are they standing on if I’m not religious?”

Miley Cyrus and the Lost Wardrobe

It is sex, drugs and pop music.” You can almost hear my fake applause through the paper, Miley. After leaving her Disney career portraying Hannah Montana, she also left most of her wardrobe in one of the old buildings. Well, they decided to demolish themselves after being faced with a wrecking ball. And yet, she was surprised by how her new persona was being scrutinised worldwide. Even I don't know what possessed ABC to have Miley perform live on new year's eve in New York. That's like asking Billy Ray Cyrus, a country singer and proud father of Miley (oh so proud), to a live show in a punk club. When I first heard about “Twerking”, it reminded me of that annoying Groove Armada song from the late 90's; “I see you baby, shaking that ass...” Secretly, I've got you singing that in your head now. Although, you may now be thinking “Why have you reminded me of this?” That's because it pretty much describes twerking, except twerking is more sexually suggestive and includes giraffe-like features, ie. sticking your tongue out looking like you're trying to lick a wall on the other side of town.

Bad Girl Does Pop

This review focuses on all the negative sides of Miley Cyrus, like doing drugs and being a bad influence, but all the inappropriate behaviour she is showing in her music videos is helping her to sell more records and make more money because more people watch the videos when it’s more graphical. It uses a lot of things that she has said in the interview but other than that it’s describing her as a ‘bad girl does pop’. Yes she may be admitting things but she’s admitting things she has already been judged on.

The interesting fact that was mentioned in the review is she is the only celebrity or singer that she does what she wants to do and doesn’t almost care. ‘A little scared of the association’ this proves that people almost want to be known as a ‘goodie goodie’ and not to be who they really are because they will be betrayed in a bad light by publicity, and they don’t want to risk their reputation.

Responding to Review Gravity

The Empire review for the new film Gravity uses a less formal writing technique in comparison with the Toronto International Film Festival 2013 article as it uses more simple sentences and less complex words.

In the opening “let’s cut to the chase” is an informal opening and it implies that the writer wants to express his opinion earlier in the text and to say something truthful. The writer uses the word love twice which shows the writer is applying his opinion to the reader about the film. The fact that it is used twice shows that he is exaggerating his views about the film.

In the first paragraph the words “seeded” and “ripened” could imply now that the film is new, fresh and something different in the film industry. It is a metaphor for growth and shows it has been talked about and “hyped up” for years in the past.

The writer is clearly a fan of Alfonso Cuarón as he mentions his skills and talent for directing films and the plot to previous films highlighting that they have been about “horny Mexican teenagers, dystopian London and Hogwarts”.

“Be seated, don your 3D glasses and let it unfold” is the writer having the opportunity to tell the reader to go and watch the film. The “let it unfold” connotes that the film with do the talking and explain itself and that it will be a good cinematic experience.

Miley Cyrus Response

The article talks of Miley Cyrus' changed persona and her transformation between 'good girl' to 'bad girl'. The article talks of this change in quite a negative light and it creates a dark image of Miley as she appears now. However the article does feature quotes from Cyrus' previous interviews, which allows her to present her viewpoint and defend herself. For example she mentions in the article that she wanted to finish her Disney contract respectfully, which suggests that during the Disney contract Cyrus was not able to be herself and found herself playing a role full time without any real chance of making some normal teenage mistakes because she had to present the 'good girl' image and be a role model to younger children.

I also think the article hints that because of the Disney contract Miley was unable to rebel in the slight ways that normal teenagers rebel e.g. piercings, hair cuts etc... so this led to a build up of this and when she was finally 'set free' she let out all the pent up rebellion that was inside of her and in her eyes she can now do what she wants.

Although the article in itself is quite unbalanced, the quotes from Miley defending herself allow the article to count as having balanced viewpoints. This is made more true by the way the article finishes. It finishes with Miley having the last word and in doing so it makes the reader feel that Miley has won the battle of words and opinions and subtly allows the reader to gain slight respect for the former 'Hannah Montana.

I largely agree with the article because although on the surface it seems to undermine what Cyrus is trying to do, it shows understanding that when she was Hannah Montana, she was playing a role and that Hannah Montana is not her true personality. Also, by people comparing her and expecting her to be Hannah Montana, it has driven her to do drastic changes to her appearance to get away from that image.

Miley Cyrus interview response

Well where do I start. From this interview it is pretty clear to all that the former Disney princess turned twerk star is trying to shed her jolly princess esc appearance and is doing so by making herself look like an absolute bell end.

Her endless amounts of public shaming have amounted to her becoming a social pariah instead of her not becoming a respected individual of the public. Instead Miley has managed to repulse pretty much everyone that has seen her “perform” for example her VMA performance which included her twerking onto Robyn Thicke whilst dressed as a teddy bear. You can quite easily see why this may be frowned upon, maybe it’s the sexual clothes or maybe it’s the fact that she is rubbing her rear on a married man (who has children) and the fact that it is on a live TV awards ceremony. Personally I think that by Miley trying to lose the Disney appearance she has caused herself to become one of those celebrities that everyone hates but everyone just puts up with.
