The article talks of Miley Cyrus' changed persona and her
transformation between 'good girl' to 'bad girl'. The article talks of this
change in quite a negative light and it creates a dark image of Miley as she
appears now. However the article does feature quotes from Cyrus' previous
interviews, which allows her to present her viewpoint and defend herself. For
example she mentions in the article that she wanted to finish her Disney
contract respectfully, which suggests that during the Disney contract Cyrus was
not able to be herself and found herself playing a role full time without any
real chance of making some normal teenage mistakes because she had to present
the 'good girl' image and be a role model to younger children.
I also think the article hints that because of the Disney
contract Miley was unable to rebel in the slight ways that normal teenagers
rebel e.g. piercings, hair cuts etc... so this led to a build up of this and
when she was finally 'set free' she let out all the pent up rebellion that was
inside of her and in her eyes she can now do what she wants.
Although the article in itself is quite unbalanced, the
quotes from Miley defending herself allow the article to count as having
balanced viewpoints. This is made more true by the way the article finishes. It
finishes with Miley having the last word and in doing so it makes the reader
feel that Miley has won the battle of words and opinions and subtly allows the
reader to gain slight respect for the former 'Hannah Montana.
I largely agree with the article because although on the
surface it seems to undermine what Cyrus is trying to do, it shows
understanding that when she was Hannah Montana, she was playing a role and that
Hannah Montana is not her true personality. Also, by people comparing her and
expecting her to be Hannah Montana, it has driven her to do drastic changes to
her appearance to get away from that image.
